Louis Schilling as Mr. Kirby, the father of Tony, is an upper-crust comic windbag. Debi Durst is excellent as the easily aghast Mrs. Kirby, mother of Tony, wife of the Mister, and she has the audience laughing from the moment her face registers that she has arrived in the house of lunatics, completely unaware that she is secretly queen of that crowd. Shawna Ramos and Edmund Sullivan took on smaller roles with panache. This particular performance was a Pacifica Chamber of Commerce mixer and before the show started, attendees were treated to one mouth-watering treat after another, all courtesy of Sonny’s Ristorante e Pizzeria (on Francisco in Sharp Park). Homemade meatball sliders, bruschetta with a nice little sweep of lemon balsamic, stuffed mushrooms with caramelized onions, homemade Italian sausage wrapped in puff pastry, and a cucumber boat with dill cream cheese and roasted red peppers — each a flavor parade for the taste buds.

Butler, who attended Northam’s inauguration, said she was shocked and disappointed by Northam’s yearbook photo. She said the Klansman costume, in particular, brought back memories of the terrorism and discrimination experienced by African-Americans in the South before and during the civil rights movement. But she said that whatever views Northam held in 1984, she was confident that he was now committed to advancing racial equity. “He’s been a good governor, and he’s been good, as far as I know, to black people,” Butler said.

“Bollywood has become so mainstream over the years that I have lived in the Bay Area,” said Pragati Grover, a planning commissioner who is organizing this year’s event along with Tharini Chakraborty and Shalini Govil-Pai. “We are lucky to live in a community that enjoys a taste of different cultures.”. Chakraborty said the organizers’ goal this year is to get more people outside the Indian-American community involved and exposed to Bollywood dance. In the past, folks have come from Los Gatos, Cupertino and even as far as Fremont.
